There’s not too much to envy about Dominic Di Grasso, the jaded, sex-addicted Hollywood exec played by Michael Imperioli on this season of The White Lotus. His infidelities have left him siloed with his old-school octogenarian father Bert (F. Murray Abraham) and wary college-age son Albie (Adam DiMarco) on a very expensive, ill-fated vacation intended to reconnect them with their Sicilian roots. His estranged wife and daughter won’t answer his calls. There are untold charges for Aperol spritzes and designer duds burning a hole in his hotel tab. Nothing seems to be going right.
But he does, through it all, wear a very covetable pair of sunglasses.
Dom’s shades, thick-rimmed and rectangular with dark gray lenses, look like a chic version of the freebies you get after Lasik. The show’s costume designer Alex Bovaird explained that she and Imperioli worked together to nail Dom’s style, with the shared vision that his joylessly hip wardrobe of Armani blazers and James Perse tees “would provide a nice counterpoint to all of the resort wear, wild prints, and bright colors we were planning to put almost everyone else in,” Bovaird tells GQ via email. If this is how Dom dresses on an Italian summer vacation, one imagines that even when he’s home in sun-bleached Los Angeles, he probably spends a lot of his time indoors.
“We didn’t want him to appear in shorts, or even short sleeves unless it was absolutely necessary. He’s a man grappling with secrets, and so it seemed right to have him in dark, mournful colors, and more covered up than most of the other guests,” says Bovaird. “His shades were another way for him to hide.” (Faithful HBO fans may also recall Imperioli's famous Sopranos role as Christopher Moltisanti—a character who also, once upon a time, had his own spry Hollywood aspirations and tended to mask his troubles behind dark sunglasses.) Those sunglasses, Boivard confirms, were made by the German eyewear brand Mykita.
