Si vous vivez sur cette planète, vous pouvez remercier l'Antarctique. Ce continent contribue à stabiliser notre climat et ses eaux fournissent des nutriments aux poissons du monde entier. C'est aussi le seul continent sur Terre consacré à la paix et à la science.

Pourtant, l'Antarctique fait face à un nombre croissant de menaces. Avec la fonte des glaces, le réchauffement des eaux, la hausse des températures et l'augmentation de la pêche, l'Antarctique et toutes les créatures qui y vivent ont plus que jamais besoin de nous.

Alors que les pays du monde s'efforcent de lutter contre le changement climatique, nous pouvons agir maintenant pour protéger les écosystèmes vitaux de l'Antarctique et réaliser le plus grand acte de protection des océans de l'histoire.

Avec ses 26 pays membres, la CCAMLR, ou la Commission pour la conservation de la faune et la flore marines de l'Antarctique, a le pouvoir d'établir trois grands sanctuaires marins dans l'Antarctique oriental, la mer de Weddell et la péninsule Antarctique.

Il a été démontré que les aires marines protégées (AMP) augmentent considérablement la biodiversité, l'abondance et la santé des écosystèmes, et offrent une résilience au changement climatique. Collectivement, ces AMP protégeraient près de 4 millions de kilomètres carrés de mer, soit la superficie de la taille de l'Union européenne, constituant le plus grand acte de protection de l’océan de l'histoire !

Les principales organisations de conservation de l’océan, dont la Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition, Antarctica2020, Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy et Only One, collaborent ensemble pour inciter à l'action, mais nous avons besoin de votre aide pour protéger l'Antarctique et faire en sorte qu’elle profite aussi aux générations futures.
